Een vochtarme huid is iets anders dan een droge huid. Waar een droge huid te weinig vet (talg) bevat, heeft een vochtarme huid juist te weinig water in de bovenste huidlagen. Door een verstoorde huidbarrière verdampt vocht sneller, waardoor de huid strak, dof of gevoelig aanvoelt. Soms verschijnen fijne droogtelijntjes of lichte schilfertjes, zelfs bij een vettere huid.
